    Breakage Allowance (Natural Stone Tiles)

For various logistical reasons, you must account for a breakage allowance of 5% concerning natural stone tiles. As a standard measure, this breakage is intended to be utilized for fitting pieces.

    General Directives

A stable foundation is a prerequisite before any paving work is undertaken. An insufficient foundation may lead to ground displacement and subsequent irreparable degradation of your installed pavement. The required foundation may comprise a crushed aggregate layer, succeeded by a layer of fill sand (for vehicular access). Conversely, for footpaths and terraces, a simple sand bed consisting of approximately 20 to 25 cm of CLEAN sand is deemed sufficient. It is of paramount importance that the tiles are meticulously cleansed following the cutting and jointing phases, in order to mitigate the potential for swarf and jointing compound to permeate the tile surface.

Materials Permissible for Compaction: Concrete paving blocks up to with a minimum thickness of , and fired/kilned paving materials

Materials Not Permissible for Compaction: Decorative tiles, natural stone tiles, and large-format paving materials.

All colourfast products, such as Geocolor and similar items, must invariably be compacted using a protective rubber mat to preclude damage to the surface layer.

    Driveway
  • Not all paving units are suitable for the construction of your driveway!

  • We recommend a minimum thickness of .

  • Prior to commencing processing, verify whether your chosen tiles are appropriate for your driveway application.

  •
    Concrete
Regarding concrete products, even when meticulously selected, minor deviations in colour and grading remain possible.

We strongly recommend that large quantities be ordered and procured in a single consignment. We further advise the blending of multiple packages to the greatest extent possible; this is especially relevant for nuanced articles.

Optimal colour blending is achieved by opening the packages in the correct sequence. Select the units from top to bottom, never layer by layer, and process multiple packages interspersedly.

Exercise caution regarding leaves and other organic waste; certain varieties incorporate (tannic) acids that can permeate the tiles. With regular maintenance and exposure to rainfall, these stains shall gradually dissipate.

Never utilize a high-pressure cleaner, synthetic cleaning agents, abrasive compounds, (de-icing) salts, or other caustic substances for cleaning the tiles.
Certain concrete articles may exhibit sensitivity to efflorescence (a white deposit). No complaints shall be accepted regarding this phenomenon, as the white deposit is self-resolving due to atmospheric reaction.

Tumbled paving stones may exhibit a tenacious grit layer ('tumbling residue') subsequent to the manufacturing process. We recommend sweeping the units with coarse, sharp sand prior to compaction to expedite the removal of this residue.

All stipulated article dimensions are approximate. Should you be strictly constrained by specific measurements, physically measure the product prior to procurement.

For the jointing of the pavement, utilize the appropriate jointing compounds. We recommend seeking comprehensive counsel from our sales personnel regarding this application.

    Surface Integrity and Application

  • You are to be made aware that paving units featuring a coating demonstrate heightened vulnerability to abrasion.

  • We counsel against the interstitial filling of these coated units with granular materials such as crushed sand or paving aggregate, the intent being to safeguard the integrity of the coating layer.

  • It is a prerequisite that these tiles are treated with judicious care; under no circumstances are they to be shoved or dragged across one another.

  • In accordance with the best practices for all paving installations, the material packages for this product must also be utilized in an optimally intermixed fashion.

  • Avoid installing the units in full abutment; they must be processed with an interstice (joint) measuring a minimum of .

  • Mitigate the risk of permanent marking by employing a soft brush to effect the immediate removal of any remnants of sand or cement.

Ceramic Paving
  • The tiles are to be utilized exclusively for patios and pathways.

  • Prior to processing, inspect the products for any potential damage or deviations.

  • Utilize clean, sufficiently draining masonry or screeding sand.

  • Install the tiles upon a stabilized and levelled sand bed (employing of stabilizing mortar per ).(The application of a bonding mortar between the tile and the sub-base enhances adherence and reduces the probability of loose tiles.)

  • Install the tiles with a joint width of at least .

  • Subsequent to laying, gently tap the tiles into position using a rubber mallet.

  • Following installation, thoroughly clean the pavement to remove cement residue.

  • Thoroughly saturate the clean pavement to allow the sub-layer to cure (harden).

  • After cleaning, fill the joints with silver sand or jointing mortar (refer to the instructions for use on the jointing mortar packaging).

  • Complaints arising from improper processing shall not be entertained.d or jointing mortar (refer to the instructions for use on the jointing mortar packaging).

Natural Stone
When dealing with natural stone paving tiles (patio tiles), variations in both size and thickness among individual tiles are to be expected. To compensate for these differences, and to lend the floor stability, a degree of flexibility, and a particular aesthetic appeal, it is highly recommended that patio tiles be laid with a joint. This joint should be a minimum of 5 mm but may extend up to 15 mm, depending on the material's character. Furthermore, to prevent stress and cracking, the floor must always be laid with a 10 mm clearance from any vertical surfaces or abutting structures. The narrowest available pointing trowel is 5 mm wide, and some floors require the joints to be fully pointed using a trowel.
Given that our product range, with its extensive selection of formats, is ideally suited for combining different sizes, we have prepared various laying patterns. These patterns can serve as examples for your floor design and are available upon request from our internal or external sales teams. These are suggestive, random patterns intended only as a starting point. Your specific, on-site situation is the determining factor for the final pattern you choose to execute. When using pre-packaged format sets, it is crucial to check in advance exactly which sizes are included, and in what quantities. This due diligence is necessary to avoid being confronted later with surpluses or shortages of specific sizes, an issue that commonly arises when working impromptu or without a clear plan

We purchase and sell only and exclusively first-quality tiles. However, it is critical to understand that a natural product possesses certain inherent characteristics that are both unchangeable and beyond our influence. These characteristics include, but are not limited to, rust formation, discoloration, and color variances both among tiles within a single batch, and between different production batches. Consequently, we cannot process any claims or complaints arising from these natural variations. We strongly advise that the necessary quantities of tile be ordered entirely in a single purchase. Furthermore, to mitigate issues as much as possible, we recommend blending the tiles from various layers and packages before installation. Differences in honing grade among individual tiles will also be minimized and better integrated into the overall floor appearance through this blending process.

The sub-base is of crucial importance for achieving a beautiful and durable natural stone floor.
A water-permeable sub-base and effective drainage are essential to prevent the greatest adversary of natural stone—standing water—from taking hold. For optimal water discharge, we recommend laying the patio with a slope of at least 1 cm per meter.
A professional construction of the sub-base, free from contamination and the risk of lime or rust migration, can prevent a host of problems.
The best composition for your sub-base may vary depending on the specific situation. The following page outlines various construction possibilities that you can implement based on the nature of your soil. Should you have any questions regarding the optimal sub-base construction for a specific site, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For natural stone, masonry sand must be utilised for the top 10 cm layer of the bedding.
For base stabilisation, the application of trass cement (commercially known as "Stabiking") is mandatory.
The appropriate jointing compound is required for the grouting process. Consultation on product selection is strongly advised.

You must ensure that the patio area is adequately scaled for practical utility. For comfortable seating, a provision of approximately per person should be maintained. Should the area be a driveway, we advise a minimum clear width of .

Outdoor patios that are set in cement or fully bonded must be equipped with expansion joints, following fixed standards to eliminate the risk of cracking.

Avoid using a pressure washer to clean your paving. For questions about the right way to maintain your terrace, or for anything else, ask our sales team for expert advice. We hope you truly enjoy your new outdoor space!
