Installation Guidance

This is a general installation guide. Specific product advice can be found on each product page on our website.

Pre-installation Check

  • Before starting to process the product, check for any defects. Should there be an unforeseen issue with the product, please contact Kooyman B.V. immediately. If, despite visible defects in the product, you proceed with further unpacking and/or processing, you have unconditionally accepted the product. The manufacturer and Kooyman B.V. must be given the opportunity to resolve any visible defects within an acceptable period.

  • For various reasons, you should allow for a breakage percentage of 5%. As a rule, this broken material can be used for fitting pieces.

General

  • Before laying paving, ensure a stable subbase. An unstable subbase can lead to subsidence and unavoidable damage to your paving.

  • The subbase can consist of a rubble bed of crushed debris topped with a layer of bedding sand (for driveways). For paths and patios, a sand bed of approximately to of CLEAN sand is sufficient.

  • It is important that the tiles are cleaned after sawing and grouting to prevent dust and jointing material from penetrating the tiles.

  • Compacting the Paving:

    • Can be compacted: Concrete paving up to with a minimum thickness of , and clay pavers.

    • Cannot be compacted: Decorative tiles, natural stone tiles, and large format paving.

  • Always compact all colour-fast products such as GeoColor, etc., with a rubber mat to prevent damage to the top layer.

Driveways

  • Not all tiles are suitable for your driveway! We advise a minimum thickness of . Before installation, inquire whether your tiles are suitable for your driveway!

Concrete

  • With concrete products, no matter how carefully selected, slight deviations in colour and grading remain possible. We recommend ordering and collecting larger batches at once. We also advise you to mix multiple packages as much as possible. This applies especially to nuanced items.

  • For nuanced colours, you achieve optimal colour blending by opening the packages in the correct sequence. It is important to get a good mix of the stones from a package. Therefore, take the stones from top to bottom, never layer by layer. When using multiple packages, mix these throughout the installation.

  • Always beware of leaves and other organic waste; some types contain (tannic) acids that penetrate the tiles. With regular maintenance and rain, these stains will gradually disappear.

  • Never use a high-pressure cleaner, synthetic detergents, abrasive cleaners, (de-icing) salts, or other corrosive agents to clean tiles.

  • Some concrete items, particularly grey concrete or coloured products, may be susceptible to efflorescence (white deposit). Complaints regarding this are not accepted, as all white deposit eventually disappears on its own. The problem thus resolves itself!

  • Tumbled stones are run against each other in a type of centrifuge called 'the tumbler' after production and curing, creating a stubborn layer of grit, the so-called 'tumbler grit'. This layer will disappear naturally over time, mainly due to weather influences. We also advise sweeping coarse, sharp sand over the stones before compacting them, which will help this grit disappear faster.

  • All stated dimensions of items are approximate. There is a possibility that the sizes may deviate slightly. If you are strictly bound to certain dimensions, measure the product before purchase.

  • Use the correct jointing materials for grouting the paving. Please seek advice from our sales staff regarding this.

Coated Tiles

  • Please note that coated tiles are more susceptible to scratches. We advise against jointing coated tiles with sharp sand (brekerzand) and/or jointing grit. This is to prevent scratches in the coating top layer.

  • It is important that these tiles are handled with care. They should not be slid over one another.

  • As with any other paving, the packages of this product should be mixed as much as possible during installation.

  • Do not lay the tiles directly against each other, but install them with a minimum joint of .

  • Avoid stains by immediately removing residual sand or cement residue with a soft brush.

Ceramic Tiles

  • Tiles are to be used exclusively for patios and paths. Before installation, inspect the products for any damage or deviations.

  • Use clean, sufficiently draining masonry or screeding sand.

  • Lay tiles on a stabilised, screeded sand bed (use of stabilisation mortar per ). The application of an adhesive mortar between the tile and the subbase increases adhesion to the subbase and reduces the risk of loose tiles.

  • Lay tiles with a minimum joint of .

  • Gently tap the tiles after laying using a rubber hammer.

  • After laying, thoroughly clean the paving of any cement residue.

  • Thoroughly wet the clean paving so that the sublayer can harden.

  • After cleaning, fill the joints with silver sand or jointing mortar (see instructions on the jointing mortar packaging).

  • Complaints due to incorrect installation will not be handled.

Natural Stone

  • With natural stone patio tiles, size and thickness differences between individual tiles may occur. Patio tiles are preferably laid with a joint. This joint is a minimum of , but can be up to depending on the material (rustic).

  • To prevent tension, a floor must always be laid free of rising elements (walls, etc.).

  • The smallest jointing iron is wide, and some floors must be pointed (grouted) with a jointing iron.

  • We only buy and sell first-choice tiles. However, a natural product has certain properties that are unchangeable and uninfluenceable, such as rusting, discolouration, and colour differences. Consequently, we cannot handle any complaints arising from these issues. We advise always ordering the required quantities at once and mixing tiles from different layers and packages before installation to prevent problems as much as possible.

  • The subbase is of crucial importance for a beautiful, durable natural stone floor.

  • A moisture-permeable subbase and good drainage are essential to give the greatest enemy of natural stone, standing water, no chance.

  • For optimal drainage, we advise laying the patio with a slope of at least per metre.

  • For natural stone, use masonry sand (top ).

  • For stabilisation, you must use Trass cement (StabiCare).

  • For jointing, you must use the correct jointing material! Ask for advice on this!!

  • Ensure that the patio is never too small for practical use. Allow approximately per person for seating. In the case of a driveway, we advise a minimum width of .

  • To prevent cracks, outdoor patios that are glued or processed in cement must be provided with expansion joints according to fixed rules.

  • Never clean your paving materials with a high-pressure cleaner. For the correct maintenance of your patio or for other questions, seek expert advice from our sales staff. We wish you much enjoyment from your new garden!
